Kwese's Don Hutchison shares his thoughts on the notion that a South American side is poised to lift the World Cup trophy. SOCHI, Russia -- Brazil right-back Danilo will be available to face Mexico in their World Cup last-16 clash, but Marcelo's status is in doubt and Douglas Costa is out, according to the team doctor. Rodrigo Lasmar said on Saturday that Danilo has recovered from a thigh injury, but that teammate Marcelo, who suffered a back spasm just moments into Brazil's final group game against Serbia, is recovering well but is not quite 100 percent fit. Guerrero to give Jedinak 'big hug' for help battling ban
Paolo Guerrero is planning to give Mile Jedinak a "big hug" when Peru take on Australia at the World Cup on Tuesday. Prior to the start of the tournament, Socceroos skipper Jedinak, along with fellow Group C captains Hugo Lloris and Simon Kjaer, asked FIFA to permit Guerrero to play in Russia. The Peru striker was set to miss his country's first World Cup in 36 years after the Court of Arbitration for Sport's decision to uphold an appeal from the World Anti-Doping Agency to extend his ban to 14 months after a positive test for cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine. The following week a Swiss tribunal agreed to provisionally suspend the sanction, and Guerrero expressed his gratitude for the role Jedinak played. "I haven't had a chance to thank him personally. I hope to do that tomorrow," Guerrero said in Sochi on Monday. "I hope we will cross paths. I've publicly thanked him. I'm so terribly grateful to him. For every footballer, we have to support each other. I want to give him a big hug." Guerrero is unclear what lies ahead of him beyond the competition, but insisted he will continue to battle against his ban as he looks to maintain a role in the Peru set-up. He said: "The future, it has nothing to do with anything. I can continue playing after the World Cup. I don't know how long the suspension will last. "I will keep fighting for my career. I don't know if it will be my last World Cup match. I feel I can contribute in the future. I will fight until the end for my national team. We have the expectation to go back home with three points. We want to make everyone happy. "I have a contract [with Flamengo] until August. I'm now here in Russia. I will have to return to Brazil with Flamengo. I don't know what will happen after August. "[It's a] complicated situation for me. I don't want to go into that. I'm focused on doing a good job. I'm really focused. I'm feeling fit."

Germany should drop Ozil - Effenberg

Germany should drop Ozil - Effenberg
Germany should drop Ozil - Effenberg
Mesut Ozil should be benched for Germany's second World Cup group game against Sweden, according to Stefan Effenberg. Arsenal midfielder Ozil played the full 90 minutes as Germany slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Mexico in their Group F opener – the side's first competitive defeat since their semi-final exit from Euro 2016 when they lost 2-0 to France. Effenberg questioned Germany head coach Joachim Low's decision not to include second-half substitute Marco Reus in his starting line-up, calling for the Borussia Dortmund man to be in from the outset against Sweden. "Low should put Ozil on the bench and bring in Marco Reus instead," Effenberg wrote in his column on t-online.de. "I could not understand why Reus did not play against Mexico from the start. "If what Reus said after the game, that he was earmarked for the 'important games', is true, then the coach has completely misjudged this. "The most important game was that against the strongest group opponent: Mexico." Sure, we made too many mistakes yesterday. We have to improve now. The match against Sweden will already be our first final. #M1Ö #Worldcup #Russia2018 pic.twitter.com/FJXPOpXkqX — Mesut Özil (@MesutOzil1088) June 18, 2018 Effenberg also called for Ilkay Gundogan to be drafted into the team to help Toni Kroos, who he said was marked out of the game against Mexico. Juventus' Sami Khedira is the man Effenberg would have Low drop for Manchester City star Gundogan, who he says would offer more creativity in midfield. "The key to Mexico was that Kroos was taken out of the game with man-marking," added Effenberg. "He could not play with his usual rhythm. "Khedira would have had to help Kroos in this case, take over the role and make the game fast, but he didn't do that. Therefore, the logical consequence would be that he no longer plays against Sweden, as they will do that in a similar way. "In place of Khedira, Ilkay Gundogan should play. The team simply needs dangerous balls from the central area to the top - that was completely missing against Mexico. "Gundogan is a player who can play such passes."

Pekerman criticises Barcelona's treatment of Yerry Mina
Colombia coach Jose Pekerman has hit out at Barcelona's treatment of Yerry Mina during his first few months in Spain, adamant he should have played more often. Mina made the switch from Brazil's Palmeiras to Barca in January to much fanfare after establishing himself as arguably the best centre-back in South America. But his transition to LaLiga has been difficult, with Barca coach Ernesto Valverde playing him just five times in the league. Pekerman remained faithful to the defender by selecting him for the World Cup despite his lack of game time in Spain. And he has assured Mina – who will start in the team's World Cup opener against Japan on Tuesday – that he and Colombia have no doubts about his capabilities whatsoever. "We have no doubts about his skills," Pekerman told reporters in Saransk on Monday. "We've never had doubts. "We trust him, he's confident, he's happy and he feels very well with the team. We also think that he's doing well and now that in the last few months in Barcelona he hasn't played much and that's not great, when he had to play they weren't many expectations. "Football is very fast, a very fast paced game, we have to decide very quickly what you're going to do. "I'm sure it was tough with him to cope with that situation, we have no doubts and we have no doubt about him being here. "It's true that during the preparation phase, all the midfielders knew that they needed to compete during the sessions. "They know they need to be fit and join the team fully. They knew that we had to pick the best ones for the games. "Those who are the fittest, but I really count on him for tomorrow's game, independently of how many minutes he will play. "I think he's got a great future in world football. We know that the current situation is difficult because it's a very important club and he joined the club at a moment when they really wanted to play with just one play. "It shouldn't be like that, football is a team game and when you have a team you have to play the same way."

No special treatment for Argentina - Dalic

No special treatment for Argentina - Dalic
No special treatment for Argentina - Dalic
Croatia head coach Zlatko Dalic said his side will not be changing their game when they face Group D favourites Argentina after opening their World Cup campaign with a 2-0 win over Nigeria. A dour game in Kaliningrad produced a first-half own-goal from Nigeria's Oghenekaro Etebo and Croatia captain Luka Modric added a second from the penalty spot 19 minutes from full-time to ensure Dalic's men moved to the top of the group. Argentina were held to a 1-1 draw by Iceland earlier in the day and Dalic said he would stick to his guns when Croatia go up against the South Americans on Thursday. "We will respect all our opponents, particularly Argentina, but we will not adjust to them," he told reporters."We will play our style. We lead the group. Congratulations! Victory over @NGSuperEagles takes #CRO to the top of Group D#BeProud #FlamingPride #Family #CRONGA #Vatreni #WorldCup pic.twitter.com/8G0ZbqhNWd — HNS | CFF (@HNS_CFF) June 16, 2018 "We will have some tweaks when we play Argentina but we will not be calculating - we are going to play our game. I said after the draw it would be one of the easiest matches we could play. It will be a joy to play against one of the best teams in the world. "We will have to play our best game. We have scouted Argentina in our best detail. We put Nigeria behind us, and we will play our style of football however much we respect Argentina." In the build-up to the game, Croatia's players had shrugged off suggestions that being dubbed the country's 'Golden Generation' put them under pressure, but the team's stars failed to shine against Nigeria. Despite the subdued nature of the performance, Dalic was satisfied with the outcome. "A win is a win," he said. "Corners and penalties are part of football. It doesn't matter how you score, it matters that you score. "We earned our luck. We want to be more efficient in attack but we are not going to split hairs about the way we scored. "It was a difficult match against an excellent opponent. We were disciplined and we deservedly won." Dalic reserved special praise for centre-backs Dejan Lovren and Domagoj Vida, who made his starting line-up ahead of Lokomotiv Moscow's Vedran Corluka. A clean sheet for Dejan Lovren. 2-0 #WorldCup pic.twitter.com/EmckQ9Grc4 — Liverpool FC (@LFC) June 16, 2018 "They played instead of Corluka as they are faster and they deserved their places," said Dalic. They both played well, firm and reliable with no mistakes. "Corluka is important for us, he did not play because of our style of play, but we start preparations for Argentina tomorrow and will check the condition of the players."

Guerrero revels in return as Peru star highlights unity
Peru captain Paolo Guerrero said he is grateful to his team-mates after scoring twice in his long-awaited return ahead of the World Cup. Guerrero was set to miss the World Cup due to a 14-month drugs suspension but a Swiss court suspended his ban from football to consider his appeal on Thursday, clearing the 34-year-old striker to play in the Russia showpiece. And Peru's all-time leading scorer made an immediate impact in his comeback on Sunday after his brace inspired a 3-0 win over fellow World Cup participants Saudi Arabia. "The group received me incredibly, I am very grateful, they have welcomed me and we are very close, nobody can take away that approach", said Guerrero, who took his international tally to 34 goals. "It does not matter who makes the goal here, there cannot be vanity, we all play for a single goal." #PERvsARA El grito de gol tan esperado de Paolo con Perú y el abrazo con todo el equipo ¡Vamos Blanquirroja! pic.twitter.com/scBTMFDUhS — Selección Peruana (@SeleccionPeru) June 3, 2018 Guerrero – who was given an initial 12-month ban after testing positive for cocaine metabolite following a World Cup qualifier against Argentina in October 2017 – was the star of the show in St Gallen. The Flamengo forward, whose suspension was halved by FIFA following an appeal before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) extended it to 14 months after a request by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) amid FIFPro's calls to reduce the ban, doubled Peru's lead approaching half-time. Following Andre Carrillo's 20th-minute opener, Guerrero netted Peru's second goal after Abdullah al Maiouf parried the ball straight to the feet of the Peruvian star. Guerrero then made it 3-0 with a header just past the hour-mark having drifted into the penalty area unmarked at Kybunpark. "Thank God there were two opportunities and I could make the goals," Guerrero added. "The first was a mistake by the goalkeeper that was left for me and I was able to connect it, and the second one was via Carrillo who provided the cross." Paul Pogba is "indispensable" to France but needs to raise his game, according to head coach Didier Deschamps. The Manchester United midfielder was whistled by some fans when he was substituted during the 3-1 win over Italy on Friday, prompting Deschamps to jump to his defence. Pogba has had a frustrating 2018, having struggled for form at club level while his relationship with manager Jose Mourinho reportedly soured, although he was named United's player of the month for April. Deschamps nevertheless has no doubts about the 25-year-old's importance to his World Cup plans, although he does admit his performances must improve.  games  goals  assists  Man of the Match awards Congratulations, @PaulPogba, you are #MUFC's Player of the Month for April! pic.twitter.com/xGVgBSkEAY — Manchester United (@ManUtd) 4 May 2018 "Not everything was successful, but he helped the team be well organised," he told Telefoot when asked about Pogba's performance against Italy.
