Aubameyang backed to perform for Dortmund against Freiburg
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is set to feature for Borussia Dortmund against Freiburg on Saturday despite talks over a possible move to Arsenal. The striker has been tipped to join the Gunners before the end of the transfer window as they seek to bolster their squad following Alexis Sanchez's move to Manchester United. Manager Arsene Wenger has claimed a deal is "not close", however, with reports suggesting Dortmund are holding out for at least a €60million bid from the Premier League side. Although his future remains unclear, head coach Peter Stoger has been delighted with Aubameyang's efforts in training and is prepared to bring him back into the side after he missed their last two Bundesliga matches. "It comes down to what I've said in recent days," Stoger told the club's official website. "If Auba trained well all week, if he is clear and focused, then he is indispensable to our squad. "Auba has had a very good, very focused and professional week of training behind him and has always given the impression he wants to give everything against Freiburg for BVB. "Because that's the case, we would like to use his quality, of course."

Neymar can play with Ronaldo at Real Madrid – Mijatovic
Predrag Mijatovic sees no reason why Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo cannot play together at the Santiago Bernabeu as the former Real Madrid forward heaped praise on the Paris Saint-Germain star. Neymar completed a world-record move to PSG from Barcelona in August last year but the Brazil international has already been linked with Spanish and European champions Madrid. There have been reports that five-time Ballon d'Or winner Ronaldo could move in the opposite direction but Mijatovic – who won the Champions League and LaLiga with Madrid – believes Neymar can flourish alongside the Portuguese superstar, just like he did with Lionel Messi at Camp Nou. "Personally, I love Neymar as a player," Mijatovic told Marca. "He has magic and would win over a lot of Real Madrid fans, or almost all of them. "If there was a chance to sign him, I'd be the first person to say yes, but I don't know if it's possible. "If Neymar was able to get on well with Lionel Messi, then there's no reason he couldn't get on well with Ronaldo." Ronaldo has struggled domestically this season, having starred with nine Champions League goals en route to the last 16. The 32-year-old has only scored four goals in 14 LaLiga appearances in 2017-18 amid links with PSG and former club Manchester United and speculation over a new contract. "The situation needs to be well evaluated at the end of this season," Mijatovic said. "These things must be talked about and if he is not happy then he has to say so. "I don't see Ronaldo as being sad in the Champions League, but I do see it in LaLiga. That has nothing to do with his wages. Maybe he's just more motivated by the Champions League."

Stupid not to - Giggs seeks Fergie's advice upon taking Wales job
Ryan Giggs revealed he spoke to his former Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson before taking over as the new head coach of the Wales national team. The ex-United winger, who spent 23 years under Ferguson's tutelage at Old Trafford, was confirmed as the new Wales boss on Monday. Giggs' appointment comes following Chris Coleman's resignation in November, while the 44-year-old was previously linked with managerial vacancies at the likes of Swansea City. After Ferguson's United successor David Moyes failed to see out his first season, Giggs took interim charge of United for the final four games of 2013-14 and then worked as assistant to Louis van Gaal. He departed upon Jose Mourinho's arrival and in a media conference on Monday, Giggs confirmed he had sought the advice of his former mentor Ferguson, under whom he won 25 major honours.  Ryan Giggs “I’m tremendously proud and excited, I can’t wait to get going.”#CroesoGiggsy pic.twitter.com/eERwvMgyGj — Wales  (@Cymru) January 15, 2018 "It would be stupid not to," Giggs said. "He's one of the greatest managers of all time. "I spoke to him but I want to be my own manager. I'm my own person." Giggs' appointment was met with a mixed reaction among some supporters, but a player who won 64 caps for his country remains unfazed by any criticism. 55% - Ryan Giggs played 64 of a possible 117 international matches for Wales between his debut in 1991 and retirement in 2007, not playing any of 18 friendlies between 1991 and 2000. Call-up. — OptaJoe (@OptaJoe) January 15, 2018 "I'm not on social media - for that very reason!" he said. "But I know the criticism will come and I'll give my all to the job. "The beauty of football is that everyone has an opinion and you have to take that. I did that as a player and I'll work hard to produce a winning team. "So many times it's been said a good career as a player doesn't mean you’ll be a good manager. But I'll do exactly what I did as a player. "I want to enjoy it, I've got a great group of players to work with. "Who can forget the Euros? As a proud Welshman watching them in France [when Wales reached the semis], I want to get us back there. We should be there."

In the wake of being linked to a move to Club America, Raul Jimenez scored for Benfica. When this season comes to an end, there's enough evidence to suggest that Hirving "Chucky" Lozano, in his first full season in Europe, will be Mexico's best player in the Old World. Players like Carlos Salcedo, Hector Herrera and Andres Guardado will be close behind, but it will be Lozano who will take the prize because of the consistency he has shown so far this term. Players like Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez and Hector Moreno have struggled in their battle to win minutes at West Ham and Roma,...

Kroos says Madrid must focus on qualifying for Champions League
Toni Kroos insisted Real Madrid have to focus on finishing fourth in LaLiga and qualifying for the Champions League following Saturday's shock loss to Villarreal. Madrid conceded with three minutes remaining as Villarreal upstaged the struggling Spanish and European champions 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu. The result left Madrid fourth and 16 points adrift of leaders Barcelona, who could extend that advantage to 19 with victory at Real Sociedad on Sunday, and only a point ahead of fifth-placed Villarreal. "We have to focus on qualifying for the Champions League next season," Kroos told BeIN Sports USA. "We have to think about our current position. "I think this should be our goal for the remainder of the season." It’s true that this is a difficult time for us and all Madridistas. But everybody who says we played a bad game today has no idea of football. It was a good performance and we have to continue. Still a lot to win this season! — Toni Kroos (@ToniKroos) January 13, 2018 "Sixteen points is very far away and now isn't the time to think about anything other than the next game," Germany international Kroos said. "We have to start gaining points once more. "This will allow Real Madrid to get closer to their goal of finishing inside the top four."

Ziganda has 'no idea' if Kepa had Real Madrid medical
Athletic Bilbao coach Jose Angel Ziganda does not know if Kepa travelled to Real Madrid for a medical, but confirmed he did not have permission to do so. Madrid reportedly want Kepa to boost their goalkeeping options, with the 23-year-old out of contract at the end of the season. Athletic have warned Kepa - out of action for the last month with a toe injury - he will have to pay his €20million release fee in full if he wants to join Madrid during the January transfer window. Reports in Spain suggested Kepa has been to Madrid to undergo a medical with the LaLiga champions, but Ziganda indicated he is unsure whether this is the case. "I have no idea if he did a medical, I don't know what to tell you," Ziganda told reporters on Friday. "Kepa was at [the club's training ground] Lezama yesterday following his recovery programme along with [defender Mikel] Balenziaga. "He didn't go to San Mames. I don't have any knowledge of a medical, no idea." Asked to clarify whether Kepa had been given permission to have a medical at Madrid, Ziganda added: "Of course he didn't. "He looks fine to me, he's the same as he always is, conversations are as normal and nothing has changed. The team is focused on Alaves. "All the distractions from outside don't help but in my case it's easy to ignore because these are external matters and the sooner they stop the better. When he has something to say, he'll say it. "Kepa on Tuesday made an attempt of one step further to train but has relapsed and is uncomfortable. I hope that he will be incorporated with the group in the coming week."

Kane benched for Swansea trip after illness
Harry Kane will have to come off the bench if he is to continue his fine goalscoring form for Tottenham, the striker having been named among the substitutes for Tuesday's clash with Swansea City. Spurs revealed on Friday that the England international had been suffering with an illness and, although he has travelled, he has not been deemed fit enough to start at Liberty Stadium. That will likely come as welcome news to struggling Swansea, as Kane finished 2017 with consecutive hat-tricks in the Premier League. "He [Kane] is okay," Mauricio Pochettino told the club's official website. "It's just a bit of a risk to play him from the beginning. "If we need him, I'm sure we will use him. We play twice in 48 hours and need to manage the team." Klopp praises 'remarkable' Salah
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hailed the "remarkable" Mohamed Salah and said the forward had even surprised him with his incredible start to the season. Salah, 25, has scored 17 goals in 21 Premier League games this campaign after arriving from Roma in the off-season. The Egypt international equalled a Liverpool record by reaching 23 goals in all competitions before New Year's Day, matching Roger Hunt (1961-62). Salah reached that tally with a match-winning brace against Leicester City and Klopp was full of praise for the former Roma attacker. "The record is remarkable and the goals themselves are remarkable as well," the German told UK newspapers. "I'd like to show you all the scouting footage we had from the games we saw. The second goal against Leicester – a goal like this was not involved. He is so physically strong. "That second goal shows what confidence does. That is how a good moment feels. "Strikers in a good moment know when they miss one chance that there will be another chance." He's done it! goals games pic.twitter.com/Ce4bO7U6tW — Liverpool FC (@LFC) December 30, 2017 Salah arrived at Liverpool in the off-season in a €42million deal for his second stint in the Premier League, having previously struggled for game time at Chelsea. Klopp, who is likely to be without Salah for the New Year's Day trip to Burnley, said the forward's impact had been a surprise. "It was always clear that we would get a very offensive midfielder with a fantastic left foot. It was clear he would help us a lot because he makes us more unpredictable with different systems," he said. "He can play second striker, the 10. Similar to Sadio [Mane]. He can play both wings and as a number eight. Same as Phil [Coutinho] and Roberto [Firmino]. "We have different choices and the two positions he's playing he likes. He always plays a little more than a second striker. You'll take that because it makes life uncomfortable for the opponent."
