We're better than Dortmund – Wagner urges Bayern to respond
Bayern Munich forward Sandro Wagner dismissed any suggestions the club were rebuilding, saying the Bundesliga champions have a better squad than Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund are four points clear atop the table and seven ahead of Bayern after winning a thrilling Der Klassiker on Saturday. Wagner feels Bayern are better than Dortmund despite their contrasting starts to the season, as the Germany international urged his team to respond and win the league title. "It's crazy when you look at the league table. We are fifth, which can't be the aspiration of Bayern Munich or us players," he said. "We have to win the Bundesliga title this year, anything else would be a disappointment. We have the best team by far, in Germany. Disappointing to say the least #BVBFCB 3-2 pic.twitter.com/PvkSgbtj50 — FC Bayern English (@FCBayernEN) November 10, 2018 "Of course, Dortmund have played a couple of good games, but in my opinion we are the better team. "Therefore, every single player needs to have the ambition to become a German champion. To say it's a rebuilding phase or similar is rubbish. "We have to win the Bundesliga."

Rooney: Kane and Sterling are England superstars
Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling are already superstars for England, according to Wayne Rooney. The former Manchester United striker will win his last international cap in a friendly against United States at Wembley on Thursday. Rooney was part of a 'Golden Generation' of England players who failed to progress beyond the quarter-finals of any major tournament. Kane and Sterling, meanwhile, helped England reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, the Tottenham striker claiming the Golden Boot after hitting six goals in Russia. And Rooney feels it is unfair to suggest Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate does not have any world-class players at his disposal. "I think they've got superstars," Rooney told a news conference. "Harry Kane has been top goalscorer in the Premier League for three or four years.  "Raheem Sterling in the last couple of years has been fantastic. I don't think it's fair to say the England team hasn't got superstars.   "What you're saying is we had some great established players: David Beckham, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry... why didn't it work? I've no idea. pic.twitter.com/SSZMTwVujd — Wayne Rooney (@WayneRooney) November 12, 2018 "We tried to be successful. We maybe never had the squad, we had the startling 11 which was very good but going into the tournament we maybe never had that back-up. But I think we had a great team, we were unlucky on a couple of occasions, going out on penalties. "We gave our best; it wasn't to be. It's a chance now for this new generation of players to take up that mantle."

Mbappe can do 'extraordinary things', says Deschamps
France coach Didier Deschamps once again sung the praises of Kylian Mbappe after the star's stunning start to the season. Mbappe, 19, has scored 13 goals and provided six assists in 12 games in all competitions for Paris Saint-Germain to begin the campaign. The attacker is a contender to win the Ballon d'Or and Deschamps – whose team face Netherlands and Uruguay later this month – again lauded Mbappe. "Kylian is able to do extraordinary things. Look at his stats. He is efficient. Look at the goals he scored with his club and with us. He also made assists," he told a news conference on Thursday. "He is a young player, who is doing very well at the moment. And he doesn't ask anything. He is an offensive leader for PSG. For us as well. The first player to reach  goals in Europe's top five leagues? He does already and it is natural. "Obviously, he can still improve and that is wonderful. But he is already very effective." Schmeichel dedicates 'emotional' victory to Srivaddhanaprabha's family
Kasper Schmeichel dedicated Leicester City's 1-0 Premier League win over Cardiff City on Saturday to the family of late owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha. The 60-year-old was one of five people killed when a helicopter they were travelling in appeared to lose control shortly after taking off from the King Power Stadium following last Saturday's 1-1 draw with West Ham. Demarai Gray's solitary goal was enough to give the Foxes maximum points at the Cardiff City Stadium and goalkeeper Schmeichel cited their late owner's family as the inspiration for their performance. "I feel proud," the Dane told Sky Sports. "It's been a really tough week for everyone. The way everyone at the club has handled themselves is a testament to the family that Vichai built. "The win took a lot out of us, that was tough, but I'm so proud of how everyone played, how professional it was. It was always going to be an emotional day. "I think you come across very few people that really impact you. He had a really big impact on my life. You can see from the reaction of everybody that he had an impact on so many lives. He's a man we're immensely proud of, immensely proud to have known. Forever in our hearts. pic.twitter.com/OXBAE1GBZA — Leicester City (@LCFC) November 3, 2018 "We're thinking about his family, we're all hurting, but I can't imagine what they're going through. We wanted to do it for him and them. We hope that we did his family proud." Leicester's players will now travel to Thailand for Srivaddhanaprabha's funeral – a decision Schmeichel says was unanimous among the Foxes squad. "Every single player wanted to go out there," he said. "There was no pressure, everyone deals with grief in different ways. The chance to go out there and attend his funeral was offered to us and everyone jumped on that."

Arthur means Barcelona do not miss Iniesta, says Essien

Arthur means Barcelona do not miss Iniesta, says Essien
Arthur means Barcelona do not miss Iniesta, says Essien
Arthur's arrival has helped Barcelona adapt to life without Andres Iniesta ahead of the first Clasico of the season, according to former Real Madrid midfielder Michael Essien. The Brazil international has slotted in alongside Ivan Rakitic and Sergio Busquets in Barca's midfield and has drawn comparisons to another of the club's iconic modern players, Xavi. Arthur joined from Gremio for an initial €30million fee plus €9million in possible variables, with his performances - particularly in the Champions League - suggesting Barca picked up a bargain. And with the 22-year-old set to face Real Madrid on Sunday at Camp Nou, Essien feels Arthur has been the perfect replacement for former captain Iniesta, who joined Japanese side Vissel Kobe earlier in the year. "They have signed this young Brazilian, he looks like such a good player," Essien told Omnisport. "And they still have [Ivan] Rakitic and [Sergio] Busquets, so it's practically the same. "You don't really feel the absence of Iniesta in there, at least at the moment. It's a shame he left but that's football isn't it?" ¡Gran victoria de nuestro equipo! ¡Seguimos fuertes!  pic.twitter.com/txmpIMB17h — Arthur Melo (@arthurhromelo) October 24, 2018 While Barca top LaLiga despite Iniesta's departure, Madrid have struggled to adapt following the shock sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Juventus, with Julen Lopetegui reportedly on the brink of being sacked. A 2-1 win against Viktoria Plzen ended a five-game run without a victory in all competitions, yet Essien feels Madrid can still triumph in the Clasico despite their poor form. "Why not? The players are still there," Essien added. "Madrid are still one of the biggest clubs in the world, and they still have the players. "It’s such a shame that Ronaldo left but it's one of those things that can happen in football. They are going to go into the game and hopefully look to win the game." Camp Nou #WeColorFootball  A special mosaic for #ElClásico pic.twitter.com/wKlhoGzjzQ — FC Barcelona (@FCBarcelona) October 25, 2018 Barca captain Lionel Messi will also miss the fixture due to a fractured arm, meaning it will be the first Clasico without either the Argentina superstar or Ronaldo since 2007. Essien, though, does not feel the match has lost any of its lustre despite Messi, Ronaldo and Iniesta all being absent. "Of course it's the best," Essien continued. "Playing in El Clasico is one of the most memorable highlights in my career.  "I played four El Clasicos, won two, drew too, I never lost. It's such a big game, and the whole world wants to watch it."

Pochettino admits Tottenham's Champions League campaign is 'nearly over'
Mauricio Pochettino conceded Tottenham's Champions League campaign is all but over following Wednesday's 2-2 draw with PSV. The visitors looked set for a first win in Group B after Lucas Moura and Harry Kane overturned Hirving Lozano's opener in Eindhoven, but Luuk de Jong snatched a late equaliser after Hugo Lloris had been sent off. The result leaves both Spurs and PSV on one point from three games, five behind Barcelona and Inter. And Pochettino accepted his side face a huge task if they are to earn a place in the last 16. "It's nearly, nearly over," he told BT Sport. "We'll see what happens with Barca and Inter. With one point after three games, it's so difficult." Well that was fun! @psveindhoven 2-2 @SpursOfficial #UCL pic.twitter.com/bvnypzB7vO — UEFA Champions League (@ChampionsLeague) October 24, 2018 Spurs had a goal from Davinson Sanchez controversially disallowed in the first half before Lucas equalised, while Lloris was given a straight red card for a challenge on Lozano outside the penalty area despite defenders covering nearby. Pochettino, though, insisted Spurs had only themselves to blame for failing to kill the match when they were in control. "It's difficult to judge the game," he said. "Many things happened. Sometimes we need to understand that football is how it is. If your responsibilities when you are in a good situation are to kill the game and you don't kill the game, you need to blame yourself. "We had control, but the most important thing is to score more than your opponent. We were not clinical in front of goal. In the end, [it's] a draw and a minimum possibility to go to the knockout stage. "It's easy to blame the decision of the referee but I think if we need to blame someone, it's ourselves. With all the circumstances that happened in the game, you must win. "We were much, much better than them, but the tempo sometimes was so slow and it's a situation we need to think [about] a little bit because in this type of game, if you get to 2-1, you must kill the game, or the opponent is always alive. "You have the situation with Hugo, maybe unfair, but if you score more goals you are going to win the game. That's why we're disappointed: not with the decision, but with ourselves."

Mourinho: Ronaldo loves United but he will want to score
Jose Mourinho expects Cristiano Ronaldo to be determined to score against Manchester United, despite his love for his old club. Ronaldo will face his former side at Old Trafford for the first time in five years on Tuesday, when Juventus visit for the Champions League Group H clash. The Portugal star's last appearance against United at their home was in the knockout phase of the 2012-13 tournament, when he scored what proved to be the winning goal in a 3-2 aggregate victory for Real Madrid. And Mourinho, who was Madrid head coach at the time, fully expects his compatriot to want to strike against his former employers again. "He came back with me in Real Madrid. It was a knockout match and I know how much he loves Manchester United. I know that, but I also know how much he wanted to win here and score against Manchester United and win against Manchester United," Mourinho told United's website.  "He scored, and they won. So, [on Tuesday], more of the same. The fans will show the respect he deserves. He will show that to the fans too. I know that he really loves the club but when the ball starts rolling, he wants to score, and he wants to win." This is why we  #UCL nights at Old Trafford! Mourinho, though, says he has been relishing the prospect of such a daunting double-header, even if he thinks Juve are a step ahead of United at present. "You cannot be in the Champions League and expect not to play and not to enjoy these opponents," he said. "I think they are always a candidate [to win] and, this season, they are more than a candidate. So, it's fantastic for us. "I said before the Chelsea game that Chelsea-Juventus in three days, for some, is a nightmare. For me, it's not a nightmare, it's just where I want to be, and I thought I was quite successful in giving this feeling to the boys before the Chelsea match. I think it's easier now to give the same feeling for this match and we have to enjoy it. Nobody can kill our desire to play that game and try to win. "In this moment, Juventus are with different footballistic power but, as I'm saying, nobody can stop us going into the game and to think we can win."

Silva downplays his role after Everton super subs seal victory
Marco Silva downplayed his role in choosing Everton's substitutes after Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Cenk Tosun sealed a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace off the bench. Palace should have taken the lead after an hour when Wilfried Zaha was fouled by Seamus Coleman in the penalty area, but Jordan Pickford saved Luka Milivojevic's subsequent penalty. Everton then punished that miss, as Calvert-Lewin met the cross of fellow substitute Ademola Lookman to put the hosts ahead with three minutes left to play. Tosun – introduced 15 minutes earlier than the other two – then got Everton's second after catching Palace on the break. But Silva brushed off any personal praise. "It's our job," he told Sky Sports. "We are here to make decisions not just on the line-up, but in the game as well. "It was all okay when we changed the three players and it worked. I am really happy for them. "Cenk in the last two home games has come on and scored goals and Dominic and Lookman have come on and created the first goal. "They are working really hard to make the starting line-up. It's important to us to have solutions on the bench to solve problems in a match."  | A penalty save at a crucial time. A clean sheet. Always vital to the win. Get the rave on, @JPickford1! pic.twitter.com/yU6LrX4b9M — Everton (@Everton) October 21, 2018 Palace manager Roy Hodgson felt the result was harsh on his team, however, convinced they were even deserving of a win. "Two goals in the 87th and 89th minute, the first one is the killer, the second one is one you concede when pushing forward," he added. "The first goal was such a massive blow, having put ourselves in the game and having the chance to score and not being able to take that. "It's hard to stand here as a loser again. I could easily have been standing as a winner, or at least coached my team to a positive point, but they scored the goals and we didn't. "We matched Everton – they're a hard-working team too. The mood in the dressing room is very sombre because we were very close to getting a good result that nobody would have begrudged us."

Barcelona can cope without Messi – Pique
Gerard Pique acknowledged the absence of Lionel Messi will be a blow but insisted Barcelona can cope without their superstar captain. Messi will miss three weeks with a fractured arm after suffering the injury in Barca's 4-2 win over Sevilla in Saturday's top-of-the-table LaLiga clash. After setting up Barca team-mate Philippe Coutinho and scoring himself, five-time Ballon d'Or winner Messi landed heavily on his right arm before leaving the field in the first half at Camp Nou. Messi will sit out next weekend's Clasico against Real Madrid, as well as Barca's Champions League fixtures against Inter.  [INJURY NEWS] Tests carried out on the first team player Leo Messi have confirmed that he has a fracture of the radial bone in his right arm. "It makes a big difference to have or not to have him but we have enough cover so as not to worry about whether he is there or not." Messi has scored seven LaLiga goals for the Spanish champions this season and 12 in all competitions. "We will try to make sure Leo's absence is noticed as little as possible," Barca midfielder Ivan Rakitic added.

He is a phenomenon - Neymar hails four-goal Mbappe
Paris Saint-Germain's Neymar described star team-mate Kylian Mbappe as a "phenomenon" and "special" after the teenager's remarkable four-goal haul against Lyon. Mbappe put Ligue 1 rivals Lyon to the sword with four goals in PSG's 5-0 demolition at Parc des Princes on Sunday. After earning the penalty for Neymar's opener, the 19-year-old forward scored four goals in 13 second-half minutes to maintain PSG's perfect start to the league season. Neymar had nothing but praise for fellow attacker Mbappe post-match, telling reporters: "Kylian is a special guy, for whom I have a lot of affection.  "We have a very strong friendship so I am very happy when he scores, when he plays a match like this and I hope to help him to make more matches like this."         View this post on Instagram                   + @k.mbappe A post shared by EneJota  neymarjr (@neymarjr) on Oct 7, 2018 at 3:50pm PDT Neymar added: "Share the leadership with Kylian? Of course, I know my value, I know the pressure that exists, I know my responsibilities but we have many quality players who also have their responsibilities. "Kylian is one of them, he is a technical leader and the group respects him. As soon as he opens his mouth to say something we listen to him and understand him, no matter how old he is.  "This is a group where everyone knows the importance of each and I want to congratulate him. He could have scored even more [laughs]. For me he's a phenomenon. I hope it will continue like that for several years because football will thank him." Mbappe's dazzling display and Neymar's goal saw record-breaking PSG become the first side to win all nine of their opening league matches in the history of France's top flight. "I think we have a great team, we have high quality players, but it's still early," Neymar said. "We improve day after day, match after match, not only in the Champions League, in Ligue 1 too. We are writing the story, we are happy. You have to congratulate the whole group for today's match. "I am happy to help the team in this way. I am happy to have also played a great match, more in the half half. In the first half we suffered a bit but we managed to take control of the match and enjoy our quality on the field." What a way to head into the international break!  #PSGOL  #ParisEstMagique pic.twitter.com/3SMBFIDtFH — Paris Saint-Germain (@PSG_English) October 7, 2018 Neymar also lauded veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, who returned to the starting XI at the expense of Alphonse Areola and kept a clean sheet. "Gigi is a natural leader, he's a legend for me," Neymar said. "He is a character who has changed Paris a little by his way of living, the way he comes to training with a smile, laughing, and talking. "When he speaks I always try to be attentive because he has a very great experience, he is very respected around the world and we are very happy to have him with us. I do not even need to talk about his level but for the person he is, his character is fantastic to be part of his career."

Lukaku hails United match-winner Sanchez
Romelu Lukaku described Alexis Sanchez as one of the hardest-working players he has seen after watching him score the winning goal for Manchester United against Newcastle United on Saturday. The home side battled from 2-0 down to win 3-2 at Old Trafford and alleviate some of the pressure on manager Jose Mourinho. Sanchez has struggled for form since joining from Arsenal in January but came off the bench to head home in the 90th minute and end his side's four-game winless run. And Lukaku was full of praise for his team-mate's determination after he netted for the first time this season. "I would have wanted to have been in his shoes, but the guy is working really hard," Lukaku told MUTV. "I think he's one of the most hard-working professionals I have ever seen and to give us the win, he deserves it and I am really happy for him." This man has scored three 90th-minute winners since 2016/17 - but his latest was by far our favourite #MUFC #MUNNEW pic.twitter.com/cEKdAO09NW — Manchester United (@ManUtd) October 6, 2018 United found themselves 2-0 down after just nine minutes thanks to goals from Kenedy and Yoshinori Muto but roared back in the second half to claim the win courtesy of Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Sanchez. Full-back Luke Shaw hopes the result will inject some confidence into the Chile forward, and the rest of the team, ahead of tough tests against Chelsea and Juventus after the international break. "It's massive," he said. "As football players, confidence is something you need when you step onto the pitch. You need to believe in yourself, you need to have that confidence to do things and we know how much of a special player he is and today could have been a massive confidence boost."
